Our History
When the Santa Fe Railroad expanded into what was then largely undeveloped West Texas, railroad officials selected a site along the banks of the Colorado River for a new town. On June 29, 1886, Ballinger held its town lot sale, drawing what is believed to be one of the largest crowds in the community's history. More than 5,000 people attended, many arriving days in advance by covered wagon and camping along Elm Creek or the Colorado River while others traveled by horseback, buggy, hack, or special train. They came with a shared vision—to purchase land and help build the new town of Ballinger.
As the town was taking shape, a group of local and out-of-town businessmen gathered in a railroad coach on the newly completed Santa Fe tracks to establish a bank. They recognized that a growing community would need a trusted financial institution to support its future. From that meeting, The First National Bank of Ballinger was founded with an initial capital of $50,000.
Over the years, The First National Bank of Ballinger has experienced growth, changes in ownership, and several locations. In 1968, the Bank moved into its current location at 911 Hutchings Avenue, where it has continued to serve generations of customers while growing within the community.
In 2004, the Bank expanded its commitment to West Texas by opening Bank of San Angelo, extending the same tradition of community banking and personal service to the residents of San Angelo and Tom Green County.
While much has changed since 1886, one thing has remained constant—our commitment to the people and communities we serve. For more than a century, the friendships, trust, and loyalty of our customers have been the foundation of our success.
We are proud of our history, honored to be part of the history of Ballinger and San Angelo, and grateful for the opportunity to continue serving our neighbors for generations to come.
From all of us at The First National Bank of Ballinger and Bank of San Angelo, thank you for your continued trust and support.
